Students to experience conservation trip to Southern Africa

Botswana is one of Africa’s most popular and exclusive safari destinations and home to well-known landmarks such as the Okavango Delta, the Kalahari, Desert and the Chobe National Park.

“Botswana is a really inspiring place, there’s a great intimacy as it really is just us and the animals in their natural habitat,” says Animal Management Curriculum Leader Jack Anderson, who is also leading on the trip. “This visit is not only about seeing animals such as, cheetahs, lions and elephants, but also being able to see the lesser known species such as; honey badgers, bat-eared foxes and porcupine, these are very rare and special to see; it a very unique place.”

Students will venture to the Greater Mapungubwe, TFCA (Transfrontier Conservation Area), which has residency of the largest population of elephants on privately owned land and where animals can freely roam. They will get to see first-hand the incredible work delivered by conservationists working within the confines of the Tuli Wilderness Game Reserve.

During the ten day visit, the students will get to meet local families at a special lunch on, experience bush walks, visit local schools and see how farms are managed within this special area, along with learn from local craftswomen the art of making baskets and carrying vessels out of locally sourced material. The accommodation will be right in the middle of the bush, where students will get to see wild dogs, giraffes, elephants and leopards.

University Campus North Lincolnshire (UCNL) student Julie Sillence said: “As a mature student with a family, I don’t get opportunities like this often, so this really is a once in lifetime experience. It’s exciting knowing we are going to learn about, collared predators and tracking, astrology and ‘how to protect yourself in the wilderness. I can’t wait!”
